Abstract: Thomson scattering phenomena underlie a powerful nonperturbing plasma diagnostic technique, which requires only access to the plasma radiation from the scattering of an incident laser beam. In this paper, a simulation of the Thomson scattering diagnostic of the TCABR tokamak clearly shows the proportionality between the spectral width of the scattered radiation and the square root of the plasma electron temperature, which is the basis for Thomson scattering temperature measurements.

Abstract: This article describes the conventional Thomson scattering diagnostic that has been developed for multipoint measurements of the electron temperature and plasma density of the tokamak ISTTOK plasma. The design is based on a single laser pulse, two multi-input three channel spectrometers, one digital oscilloscope, and a time-delay technique. Special collection optics, optimized detectors, and high transmission monofibers with large numerical aperture have been used to increase the sensitivity and spatial resolution. The number of measurement points can be extended by increasing the number of fibers without altering the collection optics or light relay system. Abstract: The installation of international thermonuclear experimental reactor-relevant materials for the plasma facing components (PFCs) in the Joint European Torus (JET) is expected to have a strong impact on the operation and protection of the experiment. In particular, the use of all-beryllium tiles, which deteriorate at a substantially lower temperature than the formerly installed carbon fiber composite tiles, imposes strict thermal restrictions on the PFCs during operation. Prompt and precise responses are therefore required whenever anomalous temperatures are detected. The new vessel thermal map real-time application collects the temperature measurements provided by dedicated pyrometers and infrared cameras, groups them according to spatial location and probable offending heat source, and raises alarms that will trigger appropriate protective responses. In the context of the JET global scheme for the protection of the new wall, the system is required to run on a 10 ms cycle communicating with other systems through the real-time data network. In order to meet these requirements a commercial off-the-shelf solution has been adopted based on standard x86 multicore technology. Linux and the multithreaded application real-time executor (MARTe) software framework were respectively the operating system of choice and the real-time framework used to build the application. This paper presents an overview of the system with particular technical focus on the configuration of its real-time capability and the benefits of the modular development approach and advanced tools provided by the MARTe framework.

Abstract: The increasing importance of real-time measurements and control systems in JET experiments, regarding e.g. Internal Transport Barrier (ITB) and q-profile control, has motivated the development of a real-time motional Stark effect (MSE) system. The MSE diagnostic allows the measurement of local magnetic fields in different locations along the neutral beam path providing, therefore, local measurement of the current and q-profiles. Recently in JET, an upgrade of the MSE diagnostic has been implemented, incorporating a totally new system which allows the use of this diagnostic as a real-time control tool as well as an extended data source for off-line analysis. This paper will briefly describe the technical features of the real-time diagnostic with main focus on the system architecture, which consists of a VME crate hosting three PowerPC processor boards and a fast ADC, all connected via Front Panel Data Port (FPDP). The DSP algorithm implements a lockin-amplifier required to demodulate the JET MSE signals. Some applications for the system will be covered such as: feeding the real-time equilibrium reconstruction code (EQUINOX) and allowing the full coverage analysis of the Neutral Beam time window. A brief comparison between the real-time MSE analysis and the off-line analysis will also be presented. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
